Leading from the front
CFFC leads the National Strategy for Financial Capability, which is a practical framework for raising the financial capability of New Zealanders. It relies on government, community and the private sector working together to have the biggest impact.

Our children and our grandchildren will face new challenges in their retirement as the population ages and the world around them changes. CFFC’s work seeks to equip people from an early age with the skills and confidence to navigate through a lifetime of financial choices, ask the right questions and be on the winning side of their decisions so that they reach retirement in good financial shape.
CFFC’s new Sorted in Schools programme began a four-year roll out to all secondary students in Term 4, 2018. It will see financial capability integrated across the New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa.
CFFC is working closely with the Ministry of Education, NZQA, the Tertiary Education Commission and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to ensure Sorted in Schools aligns with New Zealand education policy and is incorporated effectively into the curriculum.
Focusing our efforts
Among families, we’re focusing on the ‘missing middle’ – those who earn too much to qualify for state help, but too little to see a way through daily financial demands. They are ‘In the Ward’ in our triage categories – we aim to keep them out of ‘Intensive Care’ and help them progress to needing only ‘GP Visits’.
While CFFC prides itself on being a strategic centre and thought leader, we are also focused on doing what works, at scale. Our research shows that our financial capability programmes have the greatest impact when they are integrated into health, housing, education and employment services. We work with Te Puni Kōkiri, iwi, whanau, communities and workplaces to plan, pilot, and roll-out programmes that are proven to enable participants to progress to financial health.
Our programmes give community-run initiatives the tools to add financial capability content, and we partner with a range of workplaces to build financial capability in their employees. Examples include national partnerships with the New Zealand Police Families Credit Union, the New Zealand Defence Force, The Warehouse Group and a national community partnership with The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA).
